The year 2022 was a good one: “Triangle of Sadness” and “Holy Spider” won two Palms in Cannes, Fatih Akin's “Rheingold” attracted more than one million moviegoers to the cinemas, Karoline Herfurth's “Einfach mal was Schönes” was an autumn hit, and Lars Jessen's “Mittagsstunde” was the most successful German arthouse film of 2022.
Come with us on a sailing trip through an eventful film year 2022. Cast off!
One look says more than a thousand words. Our trailer show gives insight into some of the most successful MOIN films in 2022. In total, we were able to celebrate 35 cinema releases, more than 50 films participated in over 110 festivals and brought 25 awards to the Film North.

A total of nine awards went to "Burning Days" at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. It also won the prize for best editing at the European Film Awards.
Emily Atef's drama "Mehr denn je" screened at 16 festivals and premiered in Cannes.
First the Piazza Grande in Locarno, then Filmfest Hamburg. For Hamburg-based director Kilian Riedhof and his drama "Meinen Hass bekommt ihr nicht," 2022 was a good year.
Produced by Hamburg-based Rivafilm, the drama "Snow and the Bear" premiered in Toronto and won two awards at the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival.

The film "The Other Side of the River", produced by Doppelplusultra from Hamburg, was awarded Best Documentary at the German Film Awards.
From Toronto to Busan to Venice and Hamburg: filmmaker Michal Blaško's drama "Victim" about Hamburg's leading actress Vita Smachelyuk won over audiences worldwide. “Victim” was the Slovakian Oscar candidate in 2023.
The short film "Kalb" by up-and-coming Schleswig-Holstein director Friedrich Tiedtke had its world premiere at the Hofer Filmtage 2022.
The Gateway to
New Worlds
In and around Hamburg, director Alice Troughton shot the international thriller "The Tutor" with Julie Delpy and Daryl McCormack in late summer 2022. For the children's film "Pony Heart," the Hamburg-based production company Riva Film found pristine filming locations in Schleswig-Holstein. The crew of the end-time epic "Milchzähne" with Mathilde Bundschuh was also on the road in the northernmost German state. And the investigative duo Fahri Yardim and Henriette Confurius went to Hamburg, among other places, for the very dark series "Die Quellen des Bösen".
We were on location for many of the shoots in our funding region and spoke with the cast and crew.
In 2022, 1,923 filming days were spent in the Film North, 629 of them in Schleswig-Holstein and 1,294 in Hamburg. 13 feature films and four high-end series were shot here.
Tailwind for
New Series
In 2022, there were several reasons for series fans to rejoice: The first two Hamburg series premiered at Filmfest Hamburg, the City of Hamburg's series funding was solidified, and exciting new projects began shooting with "Die Quellen des Bösen," "Helgoland 513" and "Davos".

We have invested a good three million euros in the development and production of high-end series. In plain language, that means 2.9 million euros went to nine series in production, 280,000 euros to five series in project development, and 233,000 euros to five series scripts - including Maria von Heland's youth book adaptation "Alea Aquarius," "Nix für Jungs" by the Belton brothers and "Last Exit Schinkenstraße" by Heinz Strunk.
The Big Screen
in Sight
When a dark movie theater is charged with crackling tension and the curtain rises - these magical cinema moments are what drive us. That's why we've allocated the lion's share of our funding - a total of 9.1 million euros - to the production of feature films.
These 9 million euros are invested to produce around 60 feature films in the coming years. These include short films like "Duty Free" by Schleswig-Holstein-based filmmaker Hilke Rönnfeldt, documentaries like "Sternbrücke" by Christian Hornung, and feature films like "Amrum" by Hark Bohm and Fatih Akin. "Amrum" also received the highest funding amount in 2022: 800,000 euros.
Starting new projects in uncertain times is always a gamble. That's why we spent around ten percent of our funding, a total of 1.6 million euros, on the development of new films.

"Das Lehrerzimmer" by İlker Çatak celebrated its world premiere at the Berlinale 2023 and was shot entirely in Hamburg. In the leading role: European Shooting Star Leonie Benesch.
The film adaptation of Meyerhoff's bestseller was shot in Schleswig-Holstein, among other places, is in cinemas from February 23.
The soundtrack to Lars Kraume's drama "Der vermessene Mensch" comes from the Hamburg-based composer duo Kaiser Maas ("3 Days in Quiberon"). Theatrical release: March 23
For over four years, filmmaker Charly Wai Feldman has followed the Syrian professional swimmer Sara Mardini's struggle for justice and a new future in Berlin. Theatrical release: March 23, 2023
Terry Pratchett's orange cat Maurice opened in German cinemas on February 9. The animated film was produced under the lead management of Ulysses Films from Hamburg.
In 2022, we were able to support 30 films with 1.2 million euros for their theatrical releases - twice as much as in 2021. There was a further 100,000 euros for 27 subtitling, equipment and special measures. And 2023 will see some exciting theatrical releases with İlker Çataks "Das Lehrerzimmer", "Wann wird es endlich so wie es nie war" by Sonja Heiss and "Der vermessene Mensch” by Lars Kraume.
New Waters
With our "XR Battle Pitch", we made the fastest funding decision in the history of film funding in the fall of 2022: In the live pitch, the Portuguese-Brazilian artist Lui Avallos prevailed against five other international competitors with his VR experience "Queer Utopia". He received a grant of 10,000 euros for his innovative idea.
In total, we supported the development of innovative formats - from the idea to the production - with 274,000 euros, including 4 ideas with 34,000 euros, 4 concepts with 70,000 euros, three prototypes with 120,000 euros, and a production grant of 50,000 euros.
What Comes Back
to the Home Port
In 2022, for every euro of funding, three euros came back to Film-Norden. Why? All MOIN-funded productions must spend at least 150 percent of their funding sum in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein. But as a rule, they invest even more: in 2022, it was 311 percent of the total funding amount.
A total of 54 projects were completed and settled last year. The 8.5 million euros that we invested in funding for these projects became 26.4 million euros that flowed back into the region. Each euro we invested thus generated 3.11 euros for the economy in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Where the Onboard Resources
Come From
MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein’s budget in 2022 was around 18.1 million euros. In addition to project funding, we also use these funds to support Filmfest Hamburg, the Hamburg Media School and HFBK Hamburg film schools, and to fund special programs such as our GetOnSet program for professionals.
MOIN Film Fund Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein’s shareholders are the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg and the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Additional funding comes from NDR, ZDF, Warner Bros. and a fixed portion of the broadcasting fee.
All on Deck
We want the film industry to become more diverse. But measuring diversity properly is a difficult task. That's why we're launching our OMNI Inclusion platform in 2023 - an anonymous online survey tool that will provide better data on the diversity of the cinema and TV industry in Germany.
One of our goals is for female filmmakers to receive as much funding from us as male filmmakers. And we are slowly but surely approaching this mark: In 2022, 5.4 million euros - or 45 percent of our funding - went to film projects with at least one female director on the team. All the figures on the structure of our committees, our team and our funding decisions can be found in our diversity overview.
With Wind and Weather
for the Climate
A success story made in Hamburg: In 2012, we introduced the topics of environmental protection and sustainability to the industry with the Green Filming Passport. A decade later, the time has finally come: In 2023, ecologically sustainable filmmaking will no longer be an ornamental accessory, but is mandatory for all film projects that want to receive funding in Germany.
Compass for the
Future
To counteract the shortage of skilled workers in the film industry, we launched the GetOnSet training program in 2022 together with the City of Hamburg and the Hamburg Media School. With the "Let's Talk about Film Jobs" format, we regularly various present film professions - and our Port of Production is intended to help young producers further professionalize themselves and make international contacts.

In the new cinema series "MOIN Kino", well-known personalities from the Hanseatic city present their favorite Hamburg film in their favorite cinema.
In 2022, the German Short Film Award ceremony took place at Kampnagel in Hamburg - a total of six projects were honoured by the Minister of State for Culture and Media, Claudia Roth.
